Now Serving Pumpkin Spice Latte

And you know what that means! This sign on the counter Harmony Coffee House in Wolfeboro, NH a couple weeks ago got me thinking about the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte that everyone seemed to be nuts over.

OK, sure, it’s a great flavor, and  yes, I did start thinking about it as soon as the weather started to change. How did Starbucks do it? Get their brand in our heads just as the leaves start changing color? According to USA Today, it all started at Starbucks with testers tossing espresso on pumpkin pie to decide how best to get the flavor and texture to work in their coffee (great job, huh?).

Really, decades before, McCormick, the spice makers began selling a mix of nutmeg, cinnamin, ginger, and allspice as a Pumpkin Pie Spice, when canned pumpkin was first introduced, eliminating the need to measure them out individually. So, it was just a matter of time before someone took it from pumpkin pie, to lattes, to a pumpkin pie martini?
