The 2025 leaf peeping season, marked by drought and stressed trees, 2026 is shaping up to be a colorful, extended fall foliage display across much of the U.S.—especially in New England. A developing “Super El Niño” weather pattern is bringing consistent light rain and milder temperatures, creating ideal conditions for vibrant reds, oranges, and golds that last longer than in recent years.

Why 2026 Could Be Spectacular

Experts are point  to healthier forests rebounding from last summer’s drought, combined with favorable weather patterns heading into autumn as reasons for optimism. Late summer rainfall has reduced tree stress, while the El Niño–influenced forecast points to a warmer, wetter fall that will allow colors to develop gradually and last through October. Sunny days and cool (but not freezing) nights are expected to enhance pigment production, making richer colors across northern hardwood forests.

Northern New England & Higher Elevations: Peak color is forecast for late September through early October in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, with higher elevations showing early signs by mid-September.

Southern New England & Upstate New York: Expect peak leaf peeping from early to mid-October, with vivid color spreading through Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island by the week of October 13–20.

Midwest & Great Lakes: Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin should see near peak color from late September through early October, with peak foliage by mid-October.

Mountain West & California: The Sierra Nevada, Cascades, and Rockies may peak in late September, however drought and wildfire stress could subdue colors in some areas.

Southeast: Inland regions of Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama will reach peak foliage in early November, offering late-season leaf-peeping.

Planning Your Leaf-Peeping Trip

For travelers, the extended season means more flexibility in scheduling. Northern destinations will offer early color, while southern locales provide later opportunities. Week-by-week foliage maps from sources like SmokyMountains.com and AccuWeather can help pinpoint optimal  timing for specific regions.

What Could Change the Forecast

While the outlook is promising, weather remains unpredictable. An early hard frost, strong winds, or sudden drought could shorten the season or reduce color intensity.  Continued mild, moist conditions could stretch peak color well into late October across much of the Northeast. Whether you’re planning a scenic drive through Vermont’s Green Mountains or a hike in New York’s Adirondacks, 2026 offers one of the most promising foliage seasons in recent memory. Pack your camera—and maybe an extra layer—because this autumn could be unforgettable.
